Everyone has done it at some point, it’s impossible not to when it’s become so normal! The pressure of Instagram likes loom and you want to take the best possible photos of yourself to sell to the world. Luckily for you, I’ve trialled and errored many times so I can share with you the best tips for the best selfie!
1. Makeup
This is definitely optional but my skin isn’t the greatest and I feel better looking at myself in the camera when I have foundation on. I also like to apply eyeshadow and make my highlight absolutely blinding for photos as I feel like these can really set photos aside from the rest. I never usually used to apply highlight for photos as I felt like it could never be seen but when you know how to manipulate your photos right, it becomes a key aspect of the photo, and personally, I love that.
2. Snapchat filters
These are best when I don’t want to wear makeup. In my opinion, I don’t really like the ones that snapchat offer, such as the dog, however these are only my opinions! I prefer the ones that you can search for and my personal favourites are the white dust filter and the MacBook hearts. I love white dust for the effortlessly vintage vibe it gives the photo and I love the MacBook hearts filter as it smooths my skin over and I like the additional heart headband that a while ago used to be the thing that was seen all the time!
3. Golden hour / lighting!
I love to take my photos during golden hour or just when the sun is bright in general as this is the main thing that gets my highlighter to stand out. Luckily, we’ve been getting quite a lot of sun in England recently but during winter when we didn’t get too much, I took a lot of my selfies with the front flash and although it probably wasn’t the best thing for my eyes, it did make my highlight pop. Despite this, I still 100% prefer sunlight as it makes it look that little bit better!

4. Angles
I’m sure you’ve heard of this before but I learnt the importance of this and it really makes a difference! I analysed my face and realised that my right eye is slightly smaller than my left, so, when I take selfies, I position my right eye near the front so my eyes look the same size. I also slightly tilt my chin down as I feel this is most flattering but I suggest playing around because sometimes you take the best photo of yourself from an angle that you’d never expect!
5. Editing
Now there’s a whole world of editing apps that have surfaced and I’m pretty sure that one’s I use are ones you’ve probably heard of but I’ll just explain how I use them. The first is Facetune and I don’t massively use this but sometimes I use it to just lighten my eyes so the colour is more prominent. There isn’t really anything else I use this app for but it just adds a little extra something to my photos. Then I use VSCO for this, I use the A6 filter on quite a low setting then I mess around with lighting and contrast until I’m happy with it then I use grain. Grain is what many celebrities use on their Instagram and I feel that it makes so many photos look better.
6. Accessories
These can take any selfies to such a new level and I love it. I mainly play around with hair accessories since I always wear the same necklace and I don’t really have many statement earrings that I can mess around with so I like to just add scrunchies or hair ties or ribbons just to add a cute little effect to my photos. They just grab a little more attention and they also look super cute to wear in real life too!
7. Clothing choice
Now this isn’t very important but part of your top can be seen in selfies and your whole outfit if you take a mirror selfie so it’d be nice to show your personality through your outfits in these photos. I usually just wear my normal clothes because I feel these are quite nice as obviously I choose them. I personally really like to see other people’s style on photos and take inspiration.
I actually enjoy taking selfies and I hope you do too! Please share below your favourite selfie tips and lets help each other really sell ourselves on photos!

Yes! Excellent tips x
Thank you!
These are some good tip – I always look like some sort of weird egg in my selfies so I definitely need them! I learnt a really good hack when I studied film to replicate the golden hour light – stick gold foil on a board and then point that at the face when taking a photo and it looks like you’re in a sunny environment even when it’s grey! Filmmakers use it to make the light warmer for their films but I bet that could be really good for selfies as well.
Omg that’s such a good idea! I love golden hour selfies so I might test that out some time!
this is so helpful!! i always take my selfies too, and tho minus the makeup, i agree all of these work ♡ love it!!
