It’s no secret that the drugstore can be just as good as high-end rivals, especially eyeshadow palettes and lipsticks! Recently, I went out on a whim to purchase 2 new base products from the drugstore. How well do they actually work and does their price reflect their performance?
The Primer
The first product I went for was the Revolution colour correcting green primer. Now, this does cancel out some of my redness, a lot better than others I’ve tried. However, it still doesn’t quite satisfy me enough.
Green colour correctors are supposed to cancel out redness. I like to cancel out redness of my acne; this isn’t strong enough. Obviously I knew that my spots would still be visible but they aren’t less visible with this on. I could always cover my spots with foundation anyway. The aim of the primer was to wear less coverage with it.
For the price, it is amazing and it works well for application and staying powder. For colour correcting however, I can’t say it’s amazing. I usually reach for green primers over CC concealers as I just thought that a primer might be easier but since I haven’t found any that have worked as I’d like. I might venture to the colour correcting concealers. Instead of green, I might try red as my eye bags prove more of a problem than my acne and it may work better.
I’ve worn this for the past two days and as far as primers go, it’s great. As far as colour correcting goes, it’s not the strongest. It’s a cream texture rather than silicon but still allows a smooth, poreless base.
There is a pro version of this primer too and I feel like that one may be the one I’m looking for because the pro revolution products have a slightly higher price tag for higher quality products, which is almost impossible because the regular revolution products are pretty much perfection! I love their eyeshadow palettes and the sweetheart blushes. The blush in-fact is one of my holy-grails.
BB Cream
Now, for the BB cream. I’ve used BB creams in the past and unfortunately, they’ve all disappointed me. Recently, when I was in Superdrug, I took a risk and bought the Superdrug 5-in-1 Skin Perfecting Day cream. I didn’t have high hopes for this at all since it cost so little. I’d also had no hope with BB creams so that put me off.
Thankfully, I was proved wrong! This is one of the best base products I’ve ever used! The consistency is quite thick so it has a little more coverage than other BB creams but I love that. It’s also not heavy on the skin. It’s also the only product I’ve ever used that hasn’t gone oily at all in the day! This is huge for me, I have the oiliest skin! No foundation has ever stayed matte throughout the day. This BB-cream however, it worked! This is hands-down, one of the best drugstore bases I’ve used!
I was blown away by this. My skin looked naturally flawless and still made my skin look fresh and dewy even after powder! Owning the shade medium, it’s the perfect shade for me. A little concealer was used over it to cover more stubborn blemishes but it blended so well over the cream.
I can’t comment on all 5 claims, because it mentions that you could use it as a primer but I’ve only used it for a base and that was enough for me. If you have seriously blemish-prone skin, this would be a great primer. My skin however, is clearing up so there was no need to add coverage over the top.
Also, I love that it has SPF. That means both my moisturiser and base has SPF so I’m doubling up and therefore saving by not needing to buy a sun cream. It’s cruelty free, this is absolutely amazing considering the such small price tag! I’m so so happy that I went ahead and bought this as it’s a new base that I’ll reach for many times and won’t have to damage my bank account when I run out!
What are your go-to base products and what is your absolute favourite drugstore base?
Great post! I’m a big fan of green-tinted primers, but I’ve also struggled with finding ones that do enough. I feel the same about all the BB creams I tried, but I love the idea that they are helping my skin out. I’ll have to check your recommendation out! Thanks for sharing.
No problem and I definitely recommend! Thank you for reading! Xx
