Everyone hypes up Pinterest for its ability to drive traffic to their blog and business and at first, I couldn’t see why! I was pinning and repinning but I couldn’t get any link clicks to my blog. Now, Pinterest is my top source of traffic. Recently, I haven’t engaged much on social media but thanks to Pinterest, I still get 800+ views on my blog. This may not seem much but before, I was barely passing 30 views. In this post, I’m going to explain every single detail I did to get traffic to my blog! Over half of my traffic from this year is down to Pinterest and here’s how it can be successful for you. So many people have turned their blog into their business and you can too with Pinterest!
Set up a business profile and enable rich pins
Enabling a business profile allows you to see your monthly unique visitors and claim your website. Monthly unique visitors can be misleading however as it simply means the amount of people who have had your pin show up on their Pinterest. It may sound like a big deal but these people may scroll past your pin without even a second glance but it still adds to the number. The thing you need to be more watchful of is the engagement from your pins. See which pins are getting more clicks and why. Is it the design? The title? The niche? These details also give you an idea of people want to read and therefore what posts you can write. To enable rich pins, you’ll be given a code that you just insert into a header on your blog. Rich pins means that the pin will link directly to the post and the viewer can read a small section of your post before deciding if to click or not. So make your introduction interesting!
A big tip with this is to keep recreating those popular pins – they’re popular for a reason!
Decide on your brand
This consists of a few things. The design of your pins and your niche. You don’t have to stick to one niche, I’m a beauty and lifestyle blogger but I also throw in a few posts like these to help out other bloggers. My colour scheme on my blog is pink and white so I try to portray that through my pins too. Before, I used the first template I saw on Canva and it didn’t match the brand I was after. Now, I have 4 or 5 of my own template that matches the colour scheme I’m after. Also ensure that your brand is clear on your Pinterest. I make sure that I’ve stated I’m a “Beauty and Lifestyle blogger” in both my bio and display name on Pinterest. I’ve also used a photo of myself rather than my logo to make it seem more personal. This however, is entirely up to you. There are equally, if not more so successful pinners who opt for a logo profile picture. I also suggest using a board just for your pins as the featured board, this means that the pins seen as the header of your profile are pins for your own blog posts. However, you can have your own header which is what I’ve opted for.
Have a strategy
My strategy is to pin 20 new pins a day and I use the Pinterest scheduling tool to help me with this. You do not need to schedule your pins, but it helps me when I don’t have time for manual pinning. It also helps me pin when I get most engagement. My strategy also consists of the 80:20 ratio. 80% my own content, 20% others. I got this ratio from Ell Duclos who does really well on Pinterest. I like to post pins that does really well and others that need more attention. I’ve found my beauty and skincare do best on Pinterest whereas my lifestyle posts such a storytimes, gets most traffic from Twitter. I like to find the times I’ll schedule my pins from Google analytics which I’ve found has really helped. This was a tip I got from Kayleigh Zara’s post on Pinterest strategies.
This is undoubtedly one of the most important things to help traffic. Include keywords in the description but also on the pin. For example you could title a pin, “study tips!” Or you could title it, “Easy studying tips for procrastinators!” Which one sounds more helpful? For me, it’s the second. Many struggle with procrastination and they want easy ways to overcome it. The second title promises this whereas the first doesn’t look as helpful. I like to highlight the keywords on the title by writing them in a different font or colour and this seems to work well for me. Make sure you use keywords in your board descriptions as these can also help you attract more traffic!
Eye catching pins
You’ve probably heard this before but Canva is amazing for creating pins! You can use their templates or you can use your own. By using Canva, you’re ensuring that your pins are the size that’s most favoured by Pinterest. Pinterest loves vertical pins as they stand out the most! There’s plenty of design options on Canva however I like to make mine a little more unique by adding the text using Phonto. I download my fonts off of Dafont.com and my keywords are in a more cursive font. I also add my domain at the bottom, although this is optional. I also like to pin a few of my photos from my blog post as these can get traffic though not as many as the standard pins.
If you’re stuck on how to make eye-catching Pinterest graphics, you can get templates from other businesses. Sometimes they’re free if you subscribe to their e-mailing list, or you can buy templates off sites such as Etsy. This saves you the effort and time when making pins.
Make sure your group boards are active
About once a month, I like to go through my group boards and see which ones are most active. You don’t want to look like you’re spamming a group board and if the group isn’t active, your pins are less likely to be seen. Many group boards have rules to repin other people’s pins when you add your own. This is hard if the group isn’t active. Pinterest group boards can provide a lot of traffic to your blog / business if active as other pinners can repin your pins to their boards. This means other Pinterest users can find your pin and therefore you drive more traffic to your business!
Recreate your most popular pins
This one drives a lot of traffic to my blog and it’s not hard to see why. If your pin is popular, people want to read about it. Pinterest loves new pins so if you create the ones that people are clicking, then traffic will be driven to your blog. My most popular pins are my beauty myths and easy tips to stay motivated to study. These are generally consistent with the amount of traffic they bring, though occasionally my other pins blow up massively which brings welcomed traffic. You can also recreate the design that brings you most traffic, because the best designed pins are likely to gain more close-ups which in turn can lead to link clicks!
