Sometimes, trying to sleep can be an absolute nightmare! Luckily, I’ve picked up some super easy tips on how to fall asleep easier! This has stemmed from having to make myself go to sleep hours before I usually would so I can wake up at 2am, yes 2! Why you may ask, because I’ve got a job at a supermarket for online picking. It’s difficult but manageable so let jump in and help you!
Use lavender scented products
You may have seen this one before but it’s so useful! I use the Lush Sleepy lotion and I spray my pillow with a lavender scented mist. Even though I can’t smell these when I get into bed, they help me fall asleep a lot quicker. One time I forgot to use them and I was awake for ages! I ended up only having 4 hours of sleep – it wasn’t fun. These products really do make a difference!
Use an eye mask
I really can’t sleep with any trace of light. Thankfully, I found a silky eye mask for an affordable price on amazon. It has an elasticated band so it stays in place and it helps me fall asleep so much quicker. Because of the material, it’s also gentle on the eyes which I think aids the process. Previously, I had one that came free in a pyjama set. It was a rougher material and I fell asleep much slower.
These are perfect just before bed, they just make me feel so much calmer. I usually opt for decaf tea or a hot chocolate. Don’t go to caffeinated drinks as caffeine is a stimulant and this makes you more alert rather than sleepy. You could have decaf coffee if you don’t like tea or not chocolate but this has a placebo effect on me. I know that coffee usually has caffeine so it still has that effect on me even though there isn’t any caffeine.
Have a set night routine
Have a night routine that you do every night so you know that when you carry it out it’s time for bed. This just gets you into the right mindset for bed. It also doesn’t hurt to have routines. My morning routine makes me super productive and my night routine, makes me tired. This is one you may be doubtful about but you’d be blown away by the results.
Reduce screen time before bed
Again, another you’ve seen everywhere but for good reason! The light from the screen keeps you awake and therefore it takes longer for your mind to settle once you put it down. If you really can’t put your phone down, at least change the settings to night-shift. This shifts the colours to warmer so it’s less harsh on the eyes. Apple even tells you the purpose is so you can get a better nights sleep. I have mine turned on from 8pm even though I usually don’t sleep until later.
I do this one a lot and I fall asleep without realising because these daydreams then become regular dreams as I fall asleep. Sometimes my daydreams are stuff that have happened. Sometimes they’re totally made up thoughts. It is definitely a strange one but for me, it truly works!
Tire yourself during the day!
Be productive in the day and you’ll get the feeling at night where your bed literally draws you in. I have a blog post all about being productive and it really will help with sleeping quicker. You could even always try going for an extra long walk. I’m always tired after shopping and I discover it’s because I’ve done over 12,000 steps! Aim for 10,000 or even lower if you’re just starting. You may feel fine straight after but as soon as you take your seat, you’ll feel the fatigue setting in!
Lay as still as possible
Due to stress, I was really struggling to sleep during my A-levels, my motivation to study was not a problem, that was coming along fine, I just couldn’t sleep! My teachers kept drilling into me how better exams grades were correlated to a good nights sleep. This made me stress more. I then discovered a tip that said, it’s scientifically proven that you will fall asleep if you can lay perfectly still for 10 minutes. I was skeptical but I tried it and I was asleep before I knew it! Honestly, it’s harder than it sounds but it’s a hack that works like magic! If you really struggle to sleep, this is the one for you!
Have a cold room
Yes. You heard right. Turn that heating off! The reason I like this is because I like being under the covers. At the end of the day, there’s nothing better than getting cosy under the covers. You can’t do that if your room is too warm. I’m also that type of person who can’t sleep without at least a blanket covering me so a cold room is absolutely essential to help me fall asleep!
Another that seems strange but really worked for me! I read on an article that the reason you may not be sleeping is because your eyes are not tired. So, rapidly blinking them is tiring them quickly making them more likely to need rest. This made me fall asleep so much easier. I’d simply blink rapidly for around 30 seconds, pull on my eye mask and in minutes I was asleep. It was truly amazing and it still works to this day if I’m in desperate need to fall asleep quickly! You may be reading this thinking I’m crazy but all I can say is, don’t knock it u tik you’ve tried it!
